Rail Cargo Group (RCG) transported over a million tonnes of grain from Ukraine in 2022 within a matter of months. As a result, the ÖBB freight subsidiary won a prestigious award from the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.
The Advantage Austria agency of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (German: Wirtschaftskammer Österreich, WKÖ) presented the renowned Austrian Export Prize for the 29th time in Vienna on 19 June 2023. Exceptional successes in the export sector were honoured in six categories. For its work in transporting grain from Ukraine, RCG won bronze in the Traffic & Transport sector. The trophy and certificate were presented by Martin Kocher, Federal Minister of Labour and Digital and Economic Affairs and Harald Mahrer, President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.

Over 1 million tonnes of grain in a year
Ukraine is Europe’s most important exporter of grain. As the Ukraine war broke out and all Black Sea ports were blockaded as a result, more than 20 million tonnes of grain were stuck in Ukraine. For this reason, the Rail Cargo Group had stepped up agricultural transport from Ukraine from March 2022 onwards. Over a million tons of grain were successfully transported to Central and Southern Europe by the end of 2022. In fact, RCG has managed to move more than two million tonnes by now. In light of the fact that there was no capacity on the wagon market in Europe for the enormous additional quantities that were required, the provision of this transport within an extremely short period represented a great logistical challenge.
