Rail Baltica, the largest rail infrastructure project in the history of the Baltic States, has been recognized as a crucial geopolitical initiative.
Rail Baltica, the largest rail project in the Baltic States, connects Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with Western Europe using the 1435 mm European gauge, crucial for military mobility and EU rail integration.
According to Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), railways provide the best option for transporting armored vehicles and heavy military equipment to the Baltic region, particularly when they are compatible with the rail networks in Poland and Germany. Rail Baltica, among the rest, is a military asset, designed to accommodate both peacetime operations and potential conflicts. Completing the 1435 mm gauge railway is essential for enabling the swift transport of military equipment and troops across borders without the logistical challenges of changing the gauge.

Military experts say his kind of infrastructure is important in defense planning. Lieutenant General (Ret.) Ben Hodges, former Commanding General of the US Army Europe, mentioned the need for quick military logistics during a crisis. While recognizing threats and making decisions are difficult to control in advance, improving infrastructure can be addressed during peacetime to ensure rapid deployment of NATO forces when needed. Rail Baltica is poised to eliminate existing infrastructure bottlenecks, thus enhancing the region's defense readiness.
Besides civilian use., the project's high-speed rail infrastructure is specifically designed to handle heavy military equipment, such as tanks and armored vehicles, which are challenging to transport by road. A recent cost-benefit analysis revealed that Rail Baltica could replace a 7 km-long military convoy with a single 40-wagon train.

Kitija Gruškevica, Vice-Chairperson of the Management Board at RB Rail, said, "Enhanced capabilities project a power of deterrence in times of geopolitical sensitivity and volatility." The project will also integrate the Baltic States into the broader Trans-European Transport Network, paving the way for a standardized railway infrastructure across Europe. Baiba Zauere, a board member at Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas, the Latvian body implementing Rail Baltica, also noted that the project is being developed with close cooperation with national defense institutions to ensure it meets the necessary requirements for military logistics, including cargo dimensions and security.
Rail Baltica is expected to significantly enhance NATO's capacity for military transport and improve the region's defense infrastructure. The project is projected to contribute an estimated EUR 2-4 million per year to the economy through its support for military mobility.
