The Czech freight rail sector has a new leader. From 1 February, ČD Cargo will be headed by Radim Ječný, who assumes the role of Chairman of the Board at a time of mounting pressure on European rail freight markets, marked by falling volumes and growing competition from road transport.

Radim Ječný has been appointed to lead the largest freight rail operator in the Czech Republic. The new chairman faces the demanding task of stabilising the company and continuing its transformation under conditions that are currently reshaping rail freight transport across Europe. The Board of Directors of Czech Railways, acting as the General Meeting of its subsidiary ČD Cargo, approved Ječný’s appointment today. He will officially take up his position on 1 February 2026.

The new leadership is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding stability while identifying opportunities for future growth. "Freight transport across Europe is going through a difficult period, facing declining transport volumes, rising costs, and strong competition from road haulage. The task of the new Chairman of the Board will be to strengthen ČD Cargo’s position, continue its modernisation, and adapt the company to current market trends. Thanks to his long-standing experience in freight transport, Radim Ječný has our full confidence," said Michal Krapinec, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Czech Railways.

ČD Cargo has been without a chairman since last November, following the resignation of Tomáš Tóth for personal reasons.
