PostNL, the Dutch postal company, will begin transporting letters and parcels by rail in the Netherlands for the first time since 1997. The company is launching a weekly rail service to Oslo.

PostNL's goal is to eliminate emissions, so this solution is entirely in line with their goals. The company aims to reduce CO2 emissions per kilometer by 80% (compared to 2017), and the train service from Coevorden to Oslo will reduce CO2 emissions on this route by 30 tons.

In 1997, PostNL discontinued rail postal due to its irrelevance. At the time, trucks were a cheaper option and easier to get to sorting centers.

"In 2022, rail transportation will still be more expensive and complicated. But PostNL's green ambitions are far-reaching, and together with partners, we are working on solutions in the field of infrastructure and alternative fuels for greener transportation," the company said.

By 2030 the use of alternative fuels for transportation is planned to reach 90% (today it is only 35%). Also, in the coming years, the number of electric cars will increase from the current 1,300.

PostNL first outsources international shipping to long-haul carriers, which send trucks with trailers to the IMEC international mail and parcel sorting center in The Hague. The trucks then take the mail and parcel trailers to Coevorden railway station, where the trailers are reloaded onto a train to Oslo. In the Norwegian capital, the trailers are collected back from the train and delivered to PostNL.
