Under a contract worth 141.3 million euros, the electrification of the Ełk - Korsze railway line on the Ełk - Giżycko section (length 49 km) has been started to ensure faster and more efficient travel. As a result of the successful completion of the project, travel speeds will increase from 80 km/h to 160 km/h.
The contract, signed in December 2021, involves the installation of control devices and, most importantly, the modernization of tracks, which will increase the route capacity. The project includes railway crossings and 59 engineering structures reconstruction, as well as building crossings in Gizhitsko and Wydminy to exclude any train collisions. It is expected that upon completion of the works provided for in the contract, the total travel time from Olsztyn to Elk will be less than 2 hours, a reduction of about 50 minutes.
Thus, the Polish railway manager will improve the train service comfort at five stops and stations in Giżycko, Woszczel, Wydminy, Siedliska, and Stare Juchy equipping new platforms with shelters, benches, and lighting adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility.
It is planned that the works on the Ełk - Korsze railway line will be over in the first quarter of 2024.
