At the TRAKO 2023 fair in Gdańsk, PKP Intercity, in collaboration with rolling stock manufacturer NEWAG, proudly showcased the new Griffin multi-system locomotive. This advanced locomotive, capable of achieving speeds of up to 200 km/h, marks the first in a series of 15 vehicles that have been ordered.
The contract between PKP Intercity and NEWAG, signed in October 2021, was initially for ten locomotives. However, by June this year, the Polish national carrier decided to expand the purchase to include an additional five vehicles, bringing the contract's total value to nearly PLN 388 million.

"The first multi-system passenger locomotive, presented at TRAKO, from the Polish NEWAG production plant, is an example of how to invest to benefit everyone - the carrier, the manufacturer, and the passengers. PKP Intercity's huge investments are contributing to Poland's economic growth, and industrial development and encouraging passengers to choose this mode of transport. In the last eight years, we have reversed the unfavorable trend that prevailed before 2015. The carrier was incurring losses and failing to attract new customers. Today, there are funds, a record number of passengers, and more and more modern vehicles that reach more cities and towns in Poland and Europe," emphasizes Maciej Małecki, Secretary of State at the Ministry of State Assets.

The Griffin locomotives are scheduled to be operational by 2024 and, aside from serving domestic routes, will also expand connectivity with six European countries, including Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.
