More than 4 million tonnes of coal from TAURON Wydobycie mines is PKP CARGO carrying by rail to TAURON Group’s power plants and heating plants, as well as o other recipients throughout the country. The companies have signed new transport contracts worth over PLN 100 million.

PKP CARGO’s bids were selected as the best in the tender for the provision of a coal transport service for the needs of TAURON Wydobycie. PKP CARGO has signed two contracts for the railway transport of coal with TAURON Wydobycie S.A. The total value of the contracts is estimated at almost PLN 107 million. Under concluded contracts, by the end of April 2023, PKP CARGO will transport 4.4 million tonnes of coal. PKP CARGO will use standard Ea series coal wagons and specialized Fa-type unloading wagons to service the contract.

“We evaluate the cooperation with the TAURON Group, which is one of PKP CARGO’s key clients, very positively. Coal transportation is one of our company’s strategic specializations, making PKP CARGO an important element of Poland’s energy security system,” says Władysław Szczepkowski, Interim Chairman of the Board of PKP CARGO S.A.

At present, TAURON Wydobycie has a much higher demand for coal products than in previous years. It comes from large business entities and individual customers.

“Efficient rail transport of coal fuel from our three mines for power plants and heating plants is an important part of the energy security system, so we are pleased that the tender was won by a proven business partner in this area, which will allow many years of cooperation,” says Jacek Pytel, Chairman of TAURON Wydobycie.

According to the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS), PKP CARGO transported almost 93 million tonnes of cargo in 2021 and recorded a high increase in shipments (by 9.8%) compared to 2020. This increase was largely due to higher demand for hard coal, especially from the energy and heating sectors.
