PKP CARGO Loses Compensation but Celebrates a Major Win with Billion-Dollar Coal Deal

Although the Polish government will not reimburse PKP CARGO for coal transport in 2022, the company has made up for it by winning a billion-dollar tender. With its subsidiary, PKP CARGO Service, it secured a contract to transport coal to TAURON’s Silesian power plants, beating out competitors ČD CARGO and DB CARGO.

The Ministry of State Assets' decision not to compensate PKP CARGO for government-mandated coal transport in 2022, as reported by RAILTARGET, was offset on the same day by the company's success in securing a contract to transport coal to TAURON's Silesian power plants. TAURON, the second-largest electricity producer in Poland, announced that in the tender for coal transport to the Katowice, Tychy, Cieszyn, and Bielsko-Biala power plants for 2025, PKP CARGO, along with its subsidiary PKP CARGO Service, emerged victorious with the lowest bid.

The Polish subsidiary of ČD CARGO Poland came in second in the bidding process, while the Polish subsidiary of DB CARGO placed third. PKP CARGO's winning bid was PLN 14,555,881, nearly PLN 2 million less than the bid from ČD CARGO.
