ÖBB Rail Cargo Group Opens Expanded Přerov Terminal to Boost Central European Freight

After more than a year of construction, ÖBB Rail Cargo Group has reopened its modernised container terminal in Přerov-Horní Moštěnice, one of the Czech Republic’s key intermodal freight hubs. The expansion nearly doubles the site’s footprint and is expected to support higher train frequencies, greater handling capacity and new international freight connections across Europe.

Following 16 months of construction, the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group has opened the modernised combined transport container terminal in Přerov-Horní Moštěnice. With double the space, increased capacity, and modernised infrastructure, the terminal is consolidating its role as a central logistics hub in Central Europe.

The revitalisation project addresses long-standing capacity bottlenecks at the terminal, particularly the lack of handling areas and limited access to individual tracks. The terminal site has been expanded by around 17,100 m², bringing the total area to approximately 36,000 m² and almost doubling its previous size.

As part of the modernisation, handling and storage areas were enlarged, track access was improved, and new handling equipment was commissioned. With a capacity of around 3,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), the terminal will enable higher-quality shipment handling and increased train frequencies, offering greater flexibility for freight customers.

Přerov Positioned as a Strategic Logistics Hub

The modernised terminal is expected to deliver benefits for both customers and the wider region. Freight handling will be faster and more reliable, while capacity for containers and semi-trailers will increase significantly.

At the same time, Přerov’s position as a distribution centre in Central Moravia will be strengthened through improved links to both rail and road networks.

Plans include the development of new rail connections to the ports of Koper and Rijeka, the strengthening of intermodal corridors across Central Europe, and integration into Euro-Asian rail connections via Budapest. The expanded terminal area also creates opportunities for handling semi-trailers.

Investment Supports Shift from Road to Rail

The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group continues a long tradition at Přerov-Horní Moštěnice. The site traces its origins back to the former ČSKD-INTRANS terminal established in the 1970s, which was already one of the most important hubs for Czechoslovak combined transport during the ČSD era.

While many comparable terminals disappeared after 1990, the Přerov facility remained operational thanks to its strategic location and gradually evolved into one of Moravia’s most important intermodal centres.

The terminal expansion is also intended to support the broader shift of freight traffic from road to rail and is co-financed by the European Union. By expanding combined transport services, the project aims to reduce CO₂ emissions, ease pressure on congested road infrastructure and strengthen the role of rail freight as a more sustainable option within European logistics networks.
