Following the tragic accident on the Ohio-Pennsylvania border in February this year, the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Norfolk Southern Railroad for environmental damage.
The train derailment resulted in the evacuation of half of the five-thousand people in the town of East Palestine due to the contamination of neighbouring streams and rivers with dangerous chemicals. It is noted that the US government aims to hold Norfolk Southern accountable for "illegal pollution of the country's waterways" with full compensation for damages.

The lawsuit is based on the actions of the rescuers who were at the crash site since, to prevent an uncontrolled explosion, they deliberately set fire to toxic chemicals in some of the cars, which, together with fire foam, subsequently leaked into streams and rivers near East Palestine and eventually entered the Ohio River.
