PKP Intercity has received two more modern Griffin locomotives, produced by NEWAG as part of a contract for twenty units. The delivery schedule was expedited following negotiations with the manufacturer in May of this year. These locomotives will be on the tracks in the first week of August.

The acceptance process for the Griffin locomotives, manufactured by NEWAG in Nowy Sącz, is ongoing. The accelerated delivery was achieved through successful negotiations with the producer earlier this year.

Since then, and until the end of July, the carrier has received eleven locomotives, including two in recent days. Final acceptance of the new locomotives followed factory acceptance tests, which included stationary and dynamic trials, focusing particularly on the verification of safety systems and quality of workmanship. By the end of August, another two Griffins are expected to be received.

The two new locomotives will be running with passenger trains during the summer. This is particularly important during the peak travel season when PKP Intercity sees the highest number of passengers. According to the company’s transport data, 7.1 million people used the carrier’s services in June, and it is estimated that 7.8 million did so in July. Additionally, a daily record was set on July 14, with 282.5 thousand passengers transported.

The new locomotives will be used on domestic routes, servicing the most popular destinations to Wrocław, Poznań, Gdynia, Olsztyn, Szczecin, Kraków, Katowice, Zielona Góra, and Białystok. They will reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, replacing older-generation locomotives that had a top speed of 125 km/h. Safe operation is ensured by the ETCS Level 1 and Level 2 safety systems. Additional safety features include onboard diagnostics, video monitoring systems, and a fire alarm system. The locomotives are also equipped with GPS transmitters.
