China has signed an agreement with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to build a 454 km railway that will shorten the route to the Middle East and Southern Europe. The railway is expected to be shortened by 900 km, saving carriers about 7-8 working days. Thus, the railway from China will bypass Russia.

On 18-19 May 2023, the first Central Asia – China Summit was held in Xi'an, where officials stressed the need to develop the transport corridor and increase the status of Central Asia as one of the most important trans-Eurasian transport hubs. Among them, in particular, were the President of China, Xi Jinping, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov, the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, and the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The parties agreed on the joint development of transport infrastructure and multimodal transit transport in the directions of China – Central Asia – South Asia, China – Central Asia, China – Central Asia – Europe, including the China – Kazakhstan –Turkmenistan – Iran route and trans-Caspian routes using the seaports of Aktau, Kuryk and Turkmenbashy, as well as the transit transport capabilities of the city of Termez. It is noted that the parties are also promoting the early launch of the China – Kyrgyzstan – Uzbekistan railway project.
