The Multi Hub Westfalen, a multinational rail logistics hub, is to be built on the site of the former Hamm marshalling yard. An important milestone has been reached on the way there since the Federal Railway Authority has completed its preliminary examinations and confirmed the eligibility of the combined transport (CT) terminal, meaning that the plans for the construction of a CT terminal and an empty container depot in the southern area of the roughly 60-hectare site can enter the next phase. The CT terminal will create qualified jobs and training places and drive innovation in logistics.

"The positive assessment by the Federal Railway Authority on the eligibility of the CT terminal is the success of many. We can now press ahead with the planning for implementation. Together with the city of Hamm and other partners from politics and business, we have succeeded in taking a decisive step in the implementation of the Multi Hub Westfalen," says Dr Sigrid Nikutta, DB Group Board Member for Freight Transport and Chairwoman of the Management Board of DB Cargo AG.

The head of DB Cargo AG particularly emphasises the commitment of Jörg Hensel, who, as chairman of the Hamm-Bielefeld branch of the EVG, has provided the impetus for the realisation of the project from the very beginning. For Dr Nikutta, the Multi Hub Westphalia is a beacon project and an outstanding example of how good prospects for the future are created with great commitment and hands-on energy.

The Multi Hub Westfalen is a showcase project for climate-friendly rail freight transport in the eastern Ruhr region. Ideally located on important rail, inland waterway and motorway routes, it offers the best conditions for linking the various modes of transport and shifting more traffic to the environmentally friendly railways. The future of rail freight transport in Germany and Europe is being shaped in Hamm. The Multi Hub connects the region's road system with the rail infrastructure and the West German canal network in NRW. Over the next few years, a multifunctional logistics area with publicly accessible terminal facilities and a connection to the existing freight station, depot and logistics areas and sidings will be built. In addition, the Multi Hub will also make a vital contribution to the energy transition. Among other things, a hydrogen test area will be built there.
