Due to the war that Russia unleashed in Ukraine in February 2022, Lithuanian Railways (Lietuvos geležinkeliai or LTG) has decided to close its offices in the aggressor countries. The offices' liquidation process could take 3-6 months, depending on procedures and deadlines set by Russian and Belarusian authorities.
"We strongly condemn Russia's war in Ukraine, and we are looking for ways to help the Ukrainian people fighting for freedom as best we can. The offices in Belarus and Russia were intended to cooperate and seek new contacts with business partners in those countries, but opportunities for such contacts no longer exist. Therefore, the closure of offices is a necessary step," says Egidijus Lazauskas, Managing Director of LTG.
LTG Group companies demonstrate their determined position not only in words but also in deeds. In March, LTG Cargo banned loading and transportation of all of the company's public wagons to Belarus and Russia and in transit through these countries. All companies in the group strictly observe the restrictions and requirements of the sanctions, and not only the consignments of the companies subject to the sanctions, but also those of the persons who have connections with them. LTG Cargo evaluates cargo applications on its initiative and consults with the Ministries of Transport and Communications and Foreign Affairs. If such connections are identified, it refuses and will refuse to carry its cargo.
