Meeting in Moscow between Orban and Putin could reshape the rail freight transportation in Europe. A letter of intent was signed by both parties in December 2021 about a joint venture into a project in Záhony that should start sometime in the first half of 2021. Involved parties would include CER Cargo Holding, Rail Cargo Hungaria Zrt. and RZDL Europe Kft.
This hub has served for many decades as a transportation hub between Hungary, Ukraine, and EU and Eurasia countries for all kinds of products and raw materials. It has access to several European rail freight corridors. Last year it got a big boost in container traffic from the Far East and China. The volume almost quadrupled in 2021 compared to 2020 as Záhony-Port has seen 5,443 forty-foot (2 TEU) containers. There is some outgoing traffic as well, but it's only 10% of volume compared to imported goods. 692 stacked containers were exported from Záhony-Port. We talked about how it has served as a raw material transportation hub. It has not changed a bit. More than 1 million tons of coal and iron ore are transhipped through there each year.
Modernization program that is planned will include new technologies, that will not only increase the handling capacity or increase the speed of loading and unloading, but also decrease the workload, lower the noise and dust.
