ČD Cargo division is unexpectedly looking for new wagons. The cause is the increasing demand for brown coal due to the coming winter and the growing prices of energy commodities such as oil and natural gas. In September, the overall demand for brown coal in the Czech Republic has increased by 80%. The energy crisis and record-breaking prices are turning the course of the railway history Emission allowance prices are also rising, demand has recovered after the covid slump, and that´s why Germany is shutting down nuclear units.

´There is an unprecedented growth in demand for the transportation of brown coal to power plants and heating plants´ said Tomáš Tóth, head of ČD Cargo. ´Until the first half of the year, everyone rushed to the Green Deal. In August they drove a slowdown strategy towards coal, today everything is different´ he added.

According to Mr. Tóth, in September alone, the demand for lignite transport increased by 80 percent, as coal-fired power plants generally increased their output to 100 percent. Where three trains a week were usually enough, eight trains now run. For example, in the United States, it is expected that coal power plants will create 22% more electricity than last year.
