photo: Archive/GREAT NEWS: The volume of goods transported from Ukraine is growing, especially cereals are gaining momentum
When evaluating the volumes of shipments from Ukraine for the first half of 2022, a positive development can be observed. In total, almost seven million tonnes of goods were imported from Ukraine, which represents an increase of over 296 thousand tonnes and less than 4.5 per cent compared to last year.
The transport of agro-commodities by rail is largely concentrated on the carriage of cereals. They usually go to large customers such as biofuel producers, mills or export ports. Occasionally, however, there are also special, unscheduled and one-off transports, for which ZSSK CARGO deploys a now rarer type of wagons.

The transport of cereals is also gaining in intensity, as reported by Železničná spoločnosť Cargo Slovakia. Despite various logistical problems on the Ukrainian side, the volume of grain transport from Ukraine is gradually gaining momentum, especially at the border crossing station Čop - Čierna nad Tisou. "While in March 2022 we imported only 1,808 tonnes of cereals, in April it was 9,433 tonnes, in May 22,468 tonnes and in June already 32,103 tonnes," ZSSK Cargo quantified, according to which it is gratifying that the transhipment of cereals in Čierna nad Tisou is also taking place at such transhipment points that have not been used for many years. In June, the company also started to approve the first volumes of grain from Ukraine destined for the Manovce station. "The first volumes of corn, sunflower, and sunflower oil have already arrived at the Interport siding in Haniska near Košice, as well as at Preterm in Trebišov," ZSSK Cargo added.

In the segment of grain imports from Ukraine, the company expects an even more significant increase due to the very slow acceptance of grain trains at the Romanian border, which continues to the destination port of Constanta, as well as to Polish ports. On the other hand, however, iron ore shipments from Ukraine are slowing down. June was still favourable in terms of import results to metallurgical plants in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria, as more than 904 thousand tonnes of iron ore were imported through the two Slovak stations.
In the first half of 2022, 6.2 million tonnes of iron ore were imported, and the share in the total import volume of all goods reached almost 90 per cent.
