Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV) continues to promote all operations before the arrival of high-speed trains in Murcia, scheduled for this year. As a continuation of the testing phase that started last June with the BT laboratory train, a new phase of technical validations began, using the laboratory train 'Seneca' at various points along the route of the High-Speed Line that will connect Madrid to Beniel and from there to the entrance to the Murcia del Carmen station.

The first route was carried out tonight between Beniel and the vicinity of the station and consisted of geometry and track and catenary dynamics tests on the 15.5 km of the new route, which was carried out without incidents.

Throughout the different phases of the reconnaissance period, catenary and track auscultation checks are carried out along the new route, to verify its geometric conditions and the correct behaviour of all the elements and systems of the new infrastructure, which belongs to the Mediterranean Corridor and the connection of the Region of Murcia with Madrid.

A laboratory train with state-of-the-art equipment

The tests that began a few hours ago are carried out with the 'Seneca' laboratory train, with state-of-the-art onboard computer systems, which play a key role in the commissioning processes of new high-speed lines. Through its checks and analyses, which are carried out on general and sidings tracks, the 400 km of tests carried out to date with the LV train on the section between Beniel and Murcia are being extended.

The 'Seneca' train has the following characteristics:

  • Suitable for running on a standard gauge (1,435 mm)
  • Maximum speed: 330 km/h
  • Electric traction
  • Two driving heads speed up the movements in both directions
  • Instrumented to perform dynamic track and catenary auscultations, track and catenary geometry, GSM-R and ERTMS
  • Tests are also carried out on the ERTMS signalling system, train-track integration and the quality of service of the GSM-R railway telecommunications system

New connections

The Beniel-Murcia del Carmen section, once commissioned, will provide a direct high-speed connection from Murcia to Madrid and the high-speed network. It is also part of the Mediterranean Corridor and will enable future connections for passengers between Murcia, Lorca and Almeria, as well as with the rest of the cities of the Mediterranean arc, Madrid, the north of the peninsula and other destinations.

European funding

The Monforte del Cid-Murcia section of the Mediterranean Corridor is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the Pluri-regional P.O. of Spain 2014-2020. Thematic Objective 7: Sustainable Transport. "A way of doing Europe".
