PKP Intercity, Poland's national rail carrier, has signed a PLN 554.6 million contract with PESA Bydgoszcz to purchase 16 hybrid diesel-electric locomotives and provide maintenance services for a minimum of 60 months.
The hybrid locomotives will be the first of their kind in the carrier's fleet, and they will allow PKP Intercity to increase its operating capabilities while making progress towards its sustainability goals. The value of the investments contracted by PKP Intercity as part of its rolling stock strategy already amounts to PLN 7 billion gross, which highlights the significant investment that the company is making to modernize and improve its fleet.
The agreement signed with the Bydgoszcz-based manufacturer covers the delivery of 16 hybrid locomotives with a maximum speed of 160 km/h in electric traction and 120 km/h in diesel traction. The locomotives will provide reliable, environmentally friendly transportation for passengers throughout Poland, and they will also help the company reduce its carbon footprint. In addition to the delivery of the locomotives, the contract includes the provision of maintenance services for at least 60 months, as well as warranty repairs. The gross value of the contract is PLN 554.6 million.
Under the contract, PESA is to deliver the locomotives within 48 months of signing the contract, with the delivery of the first locomotive to be made no later than 30 months. PKP Intercity is planning a six-month observational operation of the first vehicle to be able to make any technical corrections or improvements before the next vehicles are delivered. The cooperation between PKP Intercity and PESA Bydgoszcz has been very successful so far, and this new agreement is expected to strengthen their partnership even further.
