PKP Intercity has signed a contract with PESA Bydgoszcz for the purchase of 16 new diesel-electric locomotives and the maintenance services provision. The hybrid locomotives will be the first of their kind in the carrier's fleet. The value of the investments contracted by PKP Intercity as part of its rolling stock strategy already amounts to PLN 7 billion gross

The contract signed by PKP Intercity with the Bydgoszcz-based manufacturer covers the delivery of 16 hybrid locomotives with a maximum speed of 160 km/h in electric traction and 120 km/h in diesel traction. In addition, the contract includes the provision of maintenance services for at least 60 months, as well as warranty repairs. The gross value of the contract is PLN 554.6 million.

"Once again, I can reiterate that we have kept our word. We declared that Polish transport must be safe and comfortable, and events such as today's confirm our declarations. We are committed to clean, environmentally friendly transport, which is why we are doing everything to ensure that more Poles return to the railways. Poland is currently the European leader in transport investments, and modernized railway routes are the foundation of an efficient transport system. In terms of railway investments, Polish companies, among them PKP Intercity and PESA Bydgoszcz, are setting the bar very high. I would love to congratulate them on the signing of another agreement which will benefit passengers above all," says Andrzej Adamczyk, Minister of Infrastructure.

The contract with PESA Bydgoszcz is a great example of how the Law and Justice government's programs affect the development of Polish railways and companies, to which PKP Intercity now commissions hybrid locomotives. Such contracts also carry a great deal of responsibility for their implementation, as not only the reliability of the connections but above all the safety of our passengers, depends on the manufacturer. It is how the Law and Justice government envisages a conscious economic policy geared towards Poland's even development in all aspects. Thanks to this, Poles have increasingly better access to railways. A modern, ecological, passenger-friendly one. This also benefits factories such as PESA, which, thanks to massive orders, also develop, provide jobs for Polish engineers, and workers, and support the state budget with taxes, emphasizes Maciej Małecki, Secretary of State at the Ministry of State Assets.

Under the contract, PESA is to deliver the locomotives within 48 months of signing the contract, with the delivery of the first locomotive to be made no later than 30 months. PKP Intercity is planning a six-month observational operation of the first vehicle to be able to make any technical corrections or improvements before the next vehicles are delivered.

We are relentlessly pursuing the goal of a safe, comfortable, predictable, accessible, and environmentally friendly railway. Each successive investment by PKP Intercity brings us closer to this goal. Thanks to the implementation of further ambitious and well-thought-out rolling stock projects, PKP Intercity's capacity will continue to increase, which will contribute to a consistent improvement in the quality of its services - says Andrzej Bittel, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure.

"The contract signed today for the purchase of 16 new hybrid locomotives is a major step in the further strengthening of our rolling stock. These will be the first vehicles of this type in PKP Intercity's fleet and will significantly increase our operating capabilities. We are investing in various locomotives types to make the best use of the capacity of the railway network in Poland," explains Marek Chraniuk, CEO of PKP Intercity.

Development of cooperation between PKP Intercity and PESA Bydgoszcz

The signed agreement is another evidence of successful cooperation between the Bydgoszcz-based manufacturer and PKP Intercity. As part of PKP Intercity's investment strategy, the two companies have already signed contracts with a total gross value of PLN 2.95 billion.

Last month, during the INNOTRANS Fair, the companies signed a contract worth PLN 376 million gross for the fifth level of maintenance (P5) repair of 59 carriages of the 152A and 154A series.

As part of the ongoing contracts, the national carrier has already taken delivery of 116 modernized 111A-20 type wagons from PESA, which were undergoing modernization with repairs at the fifth maintenance level. Nine more such vehicles will join the company's fleet. Completion of their acceptance, according to the provisions of the contract, is planned for the second quarter of 2023, and the value of the entire contract is PLN 540.4 million gross. ED74 trainsets are also being modernized at the Bydgoszcz and Minsk plants. To date, the company has taken delivery of 8 of the 14 vehicles. The value of the entire order is PLN 275 million gross, and the last modernized vehicle will be delivered to PKP Intercity in 2023.

At the end of 2020, PKP Intercity took delivery of the last of the 125 carriages that the Bydgoszcz-based PESA had modernized for the carrier. Thus, a contract worth almost PLN 470 million gross has been completed. Modern carriages are used by passengers throughout Poland. Just like the multifunctional COMBO coaches.

"We are very pleased that, once again, PKP Intercity trusted us, and we will carry out another order for the national carrier. Our cooperation to date shows that our products and services are of high quality," says Krzysztof Zdziarski, CEO of PESA Bydgoszcz.

PLN 24.5 billion investment in modern rolling stock

The contract for 16 diesel-electric locomotives from PESA is another element of the consistently implemented investment program 'PKP Intercity - Railway of Large Investments', under which the company will spend PLN 27 billion on modern rolling stock and environmentally friendly stabling stations by 2030.

As a result, the carrier plans to run around twice as many trains in 2030 and offer passengers a high standard of travel. Traveling at speeds of 160-250 km/h will become the norm, which will reduce journey times. PKP Intercity's trains will therefore speed up significantly, as most of them currently run at speeds of 120-160 km/h. Higher comfort and functionality will be ensured by the new design of the space inside the trains, the assumptions of which are currently being developed. The new vehicles will be adapted to the needs of different groups of travelers, such as people with disabilities or families with children. By 2030, the operator's entire fleet will be new or modernized, ensuring a high level of travel safety and comfort. Powerful investments in modern trains will drive the further development of railways as the most environmentally friendly means of collective transport, in line with the European Green Deal. PKP Intercity plans to become the first Polish passenger carrier whose operations will be climate-neutral.
