Channel tunnel operator Getlink and CargoBeamer have signed a partnership to launch a road train system through the Channel Tunnel between Calais (France) and Ashford (UK).

This made it possible to extend the rolling highway route from Perpignan to Ashford in France, a logical step in the development of an international multimodal transport network between the English Channel and the Mediterranean region.

A second route between Domodossola in northern Italy and Calais is slated to launch in early October 2021 and will also be extended to Ashford. Switching freight traffic to these two rail routes will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 8,000 tonnes.

The organization of car - train transportation by rail will contribute to a partial solution of the problem of the shortage of truck drivers, which has become urgent both in the UK and in Europe. It will also lead to less traffic congestion on motorways.

The new project builds on the complementary competencies of both companies. Getlink not only ensures speed, flexibility and reliability of transport, including border crossing, but also the maintenance of rolling stock at the CargoBeamer terminal in Calais through its subsidiary Europorte. CargoBeamer provides its customers with a commercially and logistically advantageous transport product.
