To improve and simplify wagon leasing, GATX has started testing a new water-based coating for wagon wheelsets at its Ostroda plant.

Every year, GATX performs around 5,000 wheelset coatings in its workshop in Ostroda, where the company is testing a new one-component water-based paint with a low VOC content and guarantees 80% shorter drying time. It also provides 50% less working time per coating, as one coat covers all the components of the wheelset, from the axle, the two wheels, and the two-bearing housings. And finally, GATX can completely abandon the use of an additional thermal indication system, as the paint already has this function. Thus, the company has opted for efficiency for both customers and nature.

Greener is better holds true for railcar maintenance. The tested paint, as a One-K product, does not require a hardener, which leads to the absence of residues of cured coating containing solvents. GATX expects to move quickly from the trial phase to the integration of this new water-based paint property into the GATX Rail Europe technical requirements manual for GATX Rail Europe partner workshops.
