The goal is to restart the rail transport and remove the trucks from the roads. The French Ministry of Transport has announced that it will finance the transport of goods by rail at a rate of € 170 million per year until 2024 as part of a national restart and development strategy.

Of the assistance corresponding to 2021, € 70 million will be allocated for the transportation of insulated wagons; € 47 million for the operation of intermodal transport and € 15 million for the development of the railways, including Calais-Sete, Cherbourg-Bayonne and Perpignan-Renji. The remaining € 38 million will cover nearly three quarters of the access fees paid by operators to SNCF Réseau.

The French Ministry of Transport has also signed an agreement with the 4F Alliance, SNCF Réseau and the Professional Association of Carriers, AUTF, to implement the National Strategy for the Development of Rail Freight. It sets out 72 measures to address the sector's major constraints and reaffirms a commitment to increase the transport share from the current 9 percent to 18 percent by 2030, equivalent to about 65 billion tonne-kilometers, and to 25 percent by 2050.

72 measures are aimed at achieving three main goals: to make the transportation of goods by rail attractive, reliable and competitive; reach out to all areas with growth potential and support network modernization and development.
