Polish oil company PKN ORLEN has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with rolling stock manufacturer Alstom for the supply of environmentally friendly, emission-free trains and hydrogen fuel for public rail transport. Based on this agreement, Alstom will cooperate with PKN ORLEN in tenders organised by public railway operators. Alstom will be responsible for supplying zero-emission trains powered by hydrogen fuel cells. PKN ORLEN will in turn be responsible for the distribution, storage and supply of hydrogen fuel for these trains.
''We are effectively implementing our hydrogen strategy, which supports our efforts to achieve carbon neutrality. By 2030, we intend to allocate approximately PLN 7.5 billion for investments that will make almost half of the hydrogen produced by the ORLEN Group low-carbon or zero-carbon. It will result in a reduction of CO2 emissions by 1.6 million tonnes and, above all, an increase in Poland's energy security. Cooperation with Alstom is another important step that will strengthen our position as a regional leader in hydrogen technologies," said Daniel Obajtek, Chairman of the Board of PKN ORLEN.

''One of the key elements of Alstom's strategy is a positive impact on the climate and the environment. We have been using hydrogen technology in rail transport for many years and we are the first company in the world to launch commercial passenger transport using hydrogen trains, which are completely emission-free and, importantly, partly manufactured in Poland. We were the first to introduce high-speed trains in Poland - 20 Pendolino trains. I hope that Alstom will also be the first to introduce hydrogen trains in Poland. Today's signing of the contract with PKN Orlen is another step towards the transformation of Polish railways using the world's most advanced technologies," said Sławomir Cyza, CEO of Alstom in Poland, Ukraine and the Baltics.
