RAILTARGET editorial office presents an exclusive statement of the Slovak Ministry of Transport and Construction on the support of rail freight transport. While in the Czech Republic, the freight rail carriers have a clear green light from the Minister of Transport Martin Kupka, Slovak politicians have long been burying their heads in the sand. Have the barriers finally been broken down? Will Slovakia support rail freight transport more?
According to the Ministry of Transport and Construction, the aim is to systematically promote rail freight transport as one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport. Therefore, the Ministry has prepared the Concept for the Development of Intermodal Transport in the Slovak Republic until 2030, which was approved by the Slovak Government at the beginning of April. This document aims to make it possible to shift as many goods as possible from truck to train or ship transport in Slovakia and thus relieve the roads, which are already very congested. At the same time, there would be a rapid reduction in CO2 production.

State aid schemes to promote intermodal transport without restricting competition are in the final stages of approval by the European Commission (public calls for tenders will be issued to all market participants). The recovery plan will finance the procurement of the necessary intermodal transport units (handling trailers, swap bodies and double pallet containers) and support the launch of new intermodal lines. The estimated cost of the recovery plan is EUR 16,1 million.
According to the Slovak Ministry of Transport and Construction, rail freight transport has and will continue to have its place in the transport system of Slovakia, as well as the EU, be it the objectives or measures defined in the Green Deal initiative, strategic and conceptual documents of the Slovak Republic.
According to his words, the Ministry of Transport will continue to look for other possibilities of regular support for accelerating the performance of intermodal transport also from the state budget or other sources such as the Modernisation Fund, which is established by the European Union and is primarily intended to support investments in increasing the energy efficiency of transport for the period 2021-2030.

In analysing the single carload (SCL) system, the Ministry of Transport and Construction found that approximately 5 million tonnes of goods can be expected to move from rail to road if the system is abolished. Without state support, the volume of transport in the SGEI system will gradually decrease, and the transport of goods will shift to the roads. Therefore, in line with the aforementioned concept, the Ministry of Transport will look for ways to support the SGEI. However, in agreement with the Ministry of Finance, a study will first be carried out to demonstrate the sense of supporting the JVZ in the conditions of the Slovak Republic.
The Slovak Ministry of Transport has also stated that it will support measures to promote environmentally friendly modes of transport, where rail freight transport clearly belongs.
