On March 23, the French Civil Protection organization, in cooperation with the cargo and rail logistics department of the SNCF Group (Fret SNCF and Captrain France), Deutsche Bahn (and its European subsidiaries), Ermewa for railcars, Association des Maires de France, SNCF Réseau, Europorte Services, Port Autonome de Strasbourg and DB Schenker chartered a train with humanitarian aid for Ukraine. The train departed from Strasbourg to Romania.

It is the first time the logistics have been changed. Civil Protection's head of international transportation, Zélie Peaumier, commented, "The geographical proximity of the crisis and the volume of donations justify using new modes of transport." Civil Protection is developing new humanitarian bridges in Moldova, Romania and Slovakia to help transport needed aid to Ukraine, which has suffered from Russia's military invasion.

Strasbourg is home to one of Civil Defense's national logistics bases. It is where all the donations for Ukraine are grouped. About 160 tons of supplies were loaded into 11 Ermewa wagons in total. The train traveled as far as Hausbergen, from where it then headed to Tulcea, Romania. Donations will be delivered to Ukraine by local operators.

Large companies have mobilized their forces and resources to make such costly logistical changes successful by providing equipment, services, and sponsorship. A second train with humanitarian aid for Ukraine is scheduled to depart on March 28.
