ERA, the EU rail agency, has granted DB Cargo and VTG permission to produce m2 wagons, which are modular in structure and can be used for the transport of different goods.
The German federal program "Future Freight Rail Transport" has taken over funding for the production of a test batch, which will consist of 50 wagons. They will be made up of removable, adjustable parts that will allow the m2 to be used for a variety of purposes and products transportation. The wheelset and brakes of the wagons can also change depending on a particular transport needs, and the loading length of the wagon will vary from 10 to 22 meters or more.
The m2 wagons will be versatile and able to carry both moisture-sensitive paper coils and large logs. The new steel coil wagon will also be suitable for scrap metal. VTG claims that the wagons’ modular structure will allow them to “address the individual needs of the shipping industry.”
