ÖBB RCG recently launched the first test train from Spain (Barcelona) to Upper Austria (St. Valentin/Schwertberg) for Hödlmayr Rail Logistics GmbH, the transport logistics specialist. In the future, this route could ensure environmentally friendly transport to meet EU climate goals.

The French railway company Fret SNCF, which operates the Saarbrücken - Barcelona section, was involved in the test run, while its subsidiary Captrain Espagna purchased Euro 6000 locomotives suitable for Spanish and French railroads, which will run quickly and smoothly on the Perpignan - Barcelona line.

"With the first test train from Spain to Austria and vice versa, we as ÖBB Rail Cargo Group are demonstrating the efficiency of our rail logistics solutions. I would love to thank our partners, Fret SNCF/Rail Logistics Europe and Hödlmayr International, for their good and professional cooperation. Together, we are laying the foundation for regular and sustainable TransFER connections to Barcelona and back," said RCG CEO Clemens Först enthusiastically.

The new rail connection will also make an invaluable contribution to European climate goals since it is common knowledge that, to date, one tonne of freight transported by rail is at least 30 times more beneficial to the environment than by road.

Landry Eymard, Director at Fret SNCF, expresses his satisfaction and the Group's pride in contributing to this traffic: "This modal shift, which serves ecology, is a new example of the possibilities offered by rail for international traffic. We must maintain this momentum and develop our competitiveness with roads in long-distance transport."

"With the new transport connection from Spain to Austria, more than 2,100 tons of CO2 can be avoided per year compared to transport by truck. For Hödlmayr, the further shift of our vehicle transports to rail is an essential part of achieving our goals within the framework of our sustainability strategy, which, in some cases, is even more ambitious than those of the EU," says Liudmyla Tarasenko, Managing Director of Hödlmayr Rail Logistics GmbH.

The successful completion of the first test train journey proved its effectiveness. Thus, a second test train is to be announced in the next few weeks. The train is scheduled for regular operation with one weekly round trip between Austria and Spain, with a further increase in frequency to three or four.
