The number of container railway lines to and from the Kehl and Strasbourg areas has recently increased from five to seven. In November, MMR Intermodal Services increased the number of return journeys to Strasbourg from two to three.
The last train, created as part of the C3C partnership between Danser Group, Haeger & Schmidt Logistics, and Ultra-Brag, started running in 2015 and was used on three weekly routes to Kehl, Germany. "Additional terminal capacity got released in Strasbourg-Nord, which explains the extension," said Michel Bot, Sales and Marketing Manager at Danser Group. "As a result, we add 90 TEUs of imports and 90 TEUs of exports every week. Our clients in this industrial border area don't matter if it's Kehl or Strasbourg.
Kehl and Strasbourg form one agglomeration, with Strasbourg on the French coast and Kehl on the German Rhine. "We serve the Alsace region in France and Baden-Württemberg in Germany, but we also provide additional inland shipping to Switzerland," says Maik Bastian, General Manager, Intermodal Transport Haeger & Schmidt Logistics.
"Were it not for capacity constraints in Rotterdam and last-mile handling in France and Germany, we would certainly increase the number of shuttle rail services.
'In 2021, rail traffic between Rotterdam and Strasbourg doubled,' says Maria Cherkasova, who is responsible for the multimodal development of the Port de Strasbourg. 'The new terminal offers interesting opportunities for further growth, also where transport sustainability is concerned. Transport by rail is efficient and environmentally friendly. We and the municipality of Strasbourg give it our full support. After all, our port is at a short distance from the Strasbourg city center.'
