The logistics company CargoBeamer (Leipzig) has opened its first terminal with the technology of horizontal transshipment of semi-trailers in the port city of Calais - the nearest town to the UK in France. In the Calais - Perpignan corridor (southern France), at first, it is planned to operate four trains a week; by the end of the year, another train may appear - to the terminal in Domodossola (Northern Italy). The location of the terminal close to the port of Calais and the Channel Tunnel gives it an important role in the operator's international route network.

The operator's partner is Euro Cargo Rail (ECR) - the French division of the German freight company DB Cargo. Each train has platform wagons for 36 semi-trailers. The terminal is designed to process six trains or 432 semi-trailers per day. It takes about 20 minutes to process one train with simultaneous loading and unloading of semi-trailers. Completion of the second stage of the terminal's development in 2023 will increase its processing capacity to 12 train pairs per day.

The construction of the terminal took 11 months, and the work was carried out by the French construction company Eiffage. The project was implemented with financial support from the government of France, the Haute-de-France region, and a grant of 7 million euros from the Connecting Europe Facility, which covered 20% of the costs. In addition, in January 2021, CargoBeamer and the European Investment Bank agreed on a loan of € 12.6 million for the construction of three terminals.
