Budimex, a major Polish construction company known for its role in developing and constructing high-speed rail networks, has been selected as a key partner for the construction of a multimodal freight and fuel transshipment hub at Katowice Airport.

The project, valued at EUR 33.7 million, is part of an agreement signed on July 24, 2024, between Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze S.A. (GTL S.A.), the airport's managing company, and a consortium of Mostostal Kraków S.A. and Budimex S.A.

The new hub will be located in the southeastern part of Katowice Airport and will connect to the Central Railway Line via rail line 182. It will feature a rail unloading front for goods and fuels, three 1,000 m³ tanks, and tanker unloading bays. Additionally, in the restricted zone of the airport, filling bays for airport tankers will be constructed. The project aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of cargo and fuel transshipment, reducing road transport in favor of rail. It will also support alternative fuels to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions, and be suitable for dual civil-military use.

The construction is expected to be completed by June 30, 2026, with significant funding from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2021-2027 Military Mobility program.
