Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the world has experienced significant restrictions on movement worldwide. This fate has not spared the railway connection between North Korea and Russia. However, despite the increasing isolation of Russia as a result of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, on February 24, 2022, 2 years after the introduction of restrictions on cross-border traffic, North Korea resumed railway connection with Russia.

The first freight train with 30 thoroughbred horses departed for the Khasan-Tumangang border crossing in North Korea. Russian railways report that the next rail shipment will be heading to North Korea and will consist of medical products.

According to Russian customs, between 2010-2019, North Korea imported 138 horses worth $584,302.

And this year, in October, South Korean media reported that Pyongyang began preparations to open new trade missions in Russia to expand imports of flour and energy. It is known that North Korea imported wheat from Russia in August and gas in October in exchange for supporting the invasion of Ukraine. Interestingly, North Korea was one of the five countries that voted against the condemnation of Russia's military actions by the UN General Assembly, as well as one of the three countries that recognized the temporarily occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions as so-called independent states.
