The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has been supporting Ukraine in its fight against the Russian occupiers since the beginning, from essential humanitarian aid to assistance with free transport for refugees and transport and logistics services for the country. In particular, on May 6, 2022, RCG launched the first train carrying Ukrainian corn to Austria to the commune of Aschach an der Donau in the Upper Austrian district of Eferding.

Overall, it is planned to transport Ukrainian grain to Austria twice a month. Each train consists of 25 bulk wagons and carries 1,400 tons of grain.

Before its final stop in the Upper Austrian district of Eferding, the train stopped in Kledering, Vienna, where it was received by Agriculture Minister Elisabeth Köstinger, Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Khymynets and ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä.

Previously, ÖBB RCG has consistently carried out agricultural transport from Ukraine mostly to Germany. For example, between March and April 2022, the RCG organized 30-grain trains from Ukraine to northern Germany, totalling 60,000 tons of grain. It is not only an invaluable aid to the Ukrainian economy during wartime but also contributes to the well-being of Europe, as agricultural supplies from Ukraine provide for the entire EU.
