About ten kilometers from Athens this former permanent navy base for the Athenian fleet is now one of the largest ports in Europe. And with its 5.56 million TEU (Twenty-foot equivalent unit) cargo, that went through its docks in 2019 it is also the fourth-largest port in Europe for container traffic.
The port has proven its strategic value not only in history but also today. Especially to the biggest world exporter, China. The true proof of this is the fact that the majority owner of the Port of Piraeus is Chinese COSCO Shipping and there are investments being made into the port’s expansion.
Sea trade involves more than 40% of both exports and imports of the European Union and therefore is the most important trade route so far. Which makes Greece a strategically placed country that connects Europe and Asia by its ports. Seaports Thessaloniki and Piraeus are key places in this trade relationship. In 2020, handling 44,000 TEU makes Piraeus the fourth most important port for Rail Cargo Group (RCG). Round trips are made to deliver containers to and from Piraeus. The cargo goes all the way to Asia or the Far East. RCG doesn’t handle only individual wagons there but is also capable to handle groups of wagons or block trains.
Currently, there are three container terminals and a fourth is being planned. Thanks to the Chinese investments since 2016 the port is growing faster than are its competitors and expansion is still ongoing.
