The obligation to transport waste by rail applies to waste with a total weight of more than 10 tonnes if it is transported within Austria over a distance of more than 300 km from 1 January 2023, 200 km from 1 January 2024 and 100 km from 1 January 2026. An exception to this obligation will occur if there is insufficient capacity on the railway to transport the waste or if transport by rail would be at least 25 per cent longer than transport by road.
The Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, the Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology has set up a platform where it is possible to request waste transport by rail or to obtain confirmation that adequate capacity cannot be provided for the waste being transported.
The regulation aims to achieve a modal shift from road to rail or to means of transport that are equivalent to the rail in terms of pollutant or greenhouse gas potential.
