At yesterday's Alstom seminar, the Traxx Shunter platform was presented as a game-changing innovation in shunting locomotives. Combining electric, battery, diesel, and hydrogen power, this locomotive offers exceptional versatility and high performance, setting it apart from conventional shunting machines. RAILTARGET attended the event to bring you the latest updates.

A Revolution in Shunting Services

Since its launch in 2018, 52 Traxx Shunter locomotives have been delivered to two major clients. Known for reliability and operational efficiency, the locomotive is transforming shunting services across the rail sector. During the seminar near Wenceslas Square in Prague, Alstom representatives emphasized the locomotive’s versatility and robust capabilities.

Eco-Friendly Power Solutions

The Traxx Shunter platform is designed for sustainable rail operations, adapting to diverse energy sources to meet the demands of eco-conscious transportation. It supports four main catenary voltages, operates electrically with battery assistance, and is available in a hydrogen-powered version for zero direct emissions. Diesel models can also run on HVO or biodiesel, significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

Performance That Exceeds Expectations

With a maximum power output of 2.5 MW and speeds of up to 120 km/h40 km/h faster than standard shunting locomotives—Traxx Shunter redefines operational efficiency. Its traction force of up to 300 kN allows it to haul longer, heavier trains without losing acceleration, even on steep inclines and tight curves.

Driver Comfort and Safety as Top Priorities

Designed with a spacious central cabin, the Traxx Shunter prioritizes driver comfort and safety. The cabin offers excellent visibility, easy access from both ends and multiple cameras for enhanced situational awareness. Convenient platforms at both ends further simplify shunting operations.

Advanced Maintenance for Lower Costs

Equipped with Alstom’s TrainTracer system and HealthHub™ platform, the Traxx Shunter enables condition-based maintenance, helping to predict and optimize upkeep. This reduces operational costs and enhances fleet management.
