Wabtec has secured a $386 million follow-on contract to deliver additional R255 hybrid battery-diesel work locomotives to New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, strengthening the authority’s long-term programme to modernise subway maintenance and improve tunnel safety.

According to Wabtec, the new order builds on earlier deliveries of the R255 platform and forms part of the MTA’s broader capital plan aimed at renewing ageing infrastructure and upgrading maintenance operations across the city’s transit network. The agreement covers both locomotives and spare parts, with production scheduled at Wabtec’s engineering and development facility in Erie, Pennsylvania. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027.

Hybrid Locomotives Designed for Underground Work

The R255 locomotives are designed specifically for subway construction and maintenance tasks, where emissions, space constraints, and power availability remain critical challenges. Each unit can operate in battery-only mode for several hours, allowing maintenance crews to work in tunnels without diesel emissions. The locomotives can also move work trains when third-rail power is switched off, supporting safer maintenance windows.

Wabtec said the locomotives are intended to replace ageing work equipment, improving reliability, operational efficiency, and air quality across the network. Alan Hamilton, vice-president of engineering at Wabtec, said the contract reflects close cooperation with the MTA and described the R255 as a practical solution for maintaining the subway system under demanding conditions.

Beyond propulsion, the locomotives are equipped with onboard cameras and video recorders to capture images of track, signalling systems, and lineside assets. Integrated diagnostics systems allow crews to monitor performance and identify potential faults, supporting more data-driven maintenance practices.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has positioned the R255 fleet as a core element of its wider strategy to modernise maintenance operations while reducing emissions in one of the world’s busiest underground rail systems.
