A major shake-up in European rail freight is underway—VTG has taken full control of Retrack Slovakia, cementing its dominance in the Germany–Eastern Europe corridor. With new leadership and an expanded traction network, is this the start of a new era in rail logistics?
VTG GmbH has completed the acquisition of 100% ownership of Retrack Slovakia s.r.o. Previously, VTG held a majority stake in the company since 2020, but with this latest transaction, Retrack Slovakia will now be fully integrated into VTG’s operations, according to VTG's press release. "The acquisition of the remaining shares by VTG was part of a long-term plan pursued by the two founders and managing directors," said Alberto Nobis, CEO of VTG GmbH. "We are excited to integrate Retrack Slovakia even more closely into our operations."
As reported by Railvolution, Retrack Slovakia was originally founded as Carbo Rail s.r.o. by Milan Kortis and Jan Simco, two experienced railway entrepreneurs who successfully built the company into a recognized traction service provider across Europe. In a rebranding move, the company adopted the Retrack Slovakia name after VTG’s initial investment in 2020.

Enhancing Rail Connectivity Between Germany and Eastern Europe
Retrack Slovakia plays a crucial role in providing traction services for freight transport across key European corridors. With full ownership of the company, VTG aims to offer end-to-end rail freight solutions along the Germany–Eastern Europe route, benefiting customers with a more streamlined and efficient transport network. "By this addition to our rail traction capabilities within VTG, customers benefit from an end-to-end offering along the Germany–Eastern Europe corridor," Nobis added.
This strategic acquisition aligns with VTG’s broader vision of strengthening its position in the European rail freight sector while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and efficient rail logistics solutions.
Management Transition and Future Direction
As part of the transition, Milan Kortis and Jan Simco will step down from their roles as managing directors. VTG’s Executive Board has expressed gratitude for their leadership and contributions in developing Retrack Slovakia into a key player in the European traction services market.
During the management handover, Tobias Behncke, Managing Director of Retrack Germany GmbH, and Zoltan Potvorszki, Head of Region Southeast at VTG, will take over joint management responsibilities for Retrack Slovakia.
