Ukraine's national carrier Ukrzaliznytsia signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation with VTG, a German logistics company, during the international trade fair, transport logistic 2023, in Munich last week.

The intermodal service, which combines container, semi-trailers, and combined transport trains, was introduced by Ukrainian Railways earlier this year based on rolling stock from the Liski Transport Service Centre branch. The possibility of organising similar services to Poland, Austria, Romania and Turkey is currently being considered.

The signed MoU aims to develop intermodal traffic between Ukraine and Europe, providing customers with several benefits. In particular, the connections between European countries and Ukraine will help to improve the cost and rhythmicity of transportation.

In addition, representatives of Ukrainian Railways held some meetings with the management of various European companies, including PKP Cargo, EP Logistics and Slovenian Railways.

Ukrzaliznytsia also discussed the introduction of modern technological solutions for the integration of rail freight into the European system during a meeting with Alstom, a French engineering company.

According to the press centre of Ukrzaliznytsia, the discussion was related to "the possibility of integrating in Ukraine a technological development of the Spanish company Tria – car bogies with a sliding system for the transition from a 1435 mm gauge to a 1520 mm gauge." It is expected that an expert group will be set up to assess the feasibility of introducing this technology at railway crossings with similar gauges.
