At the recently concluded Eastern Economic Forum 2023, a landmark agreement was inked between the Far East and Arctic Development Corporation and Port Elga. The partnership, set to bring to life the Port Elga coal marine terminal near Cape Manorsky in Khabarovsk Territory, envisages an investment exceeding 136 billion rubles. This commitment underscores not just the construction of a vital logistics asset but is projected to generate over 3,000 new employment opportunities. The terminal, slated to handle an impressive 30 million tonnes annually, will play a pivotal role in the ELSI Far East logistics cluster.

Yury Trutnev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and Plenipotentiary Envoy of the President of the Russian Federation to the Far Eastern Federal District, emphasized the gravity of the initiative, stating that mining and processing of minerals remains foundational for the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). With nearly half of the republic's gross regional product being buoyed by mining, the addition of the marine terminal in Khabarovsk Krai can substantially augment Yakutia's industrial might. Significantly, the Elga coal finds its path to this terminal via the Pacific Railway. Such an infrastructural framework is designed not only to buttress Khabarovsk Krai's port facilities but also to inject fresh revenue streams through taxes.

Vadim Bugaev, the General Director of Port Elga, highlighted the global stature of the Elga coal deposit in Yakutia, terming it among the world's foremost repositories of premium coking coal. The ensuing products from the Elga deposit, known for their superior quality, find resonance in both domestic and international markets. The inauguration of the Port Elga terminal and the Pacific Railway's concurrent commissioning promises to rejuvenate the industrial canvas of the Far East. The Pacific Railway, in particular, is poised to redefine coal transportation from the Elga deposit, easing the burden on the Baikal-Amur Mainline and setting the stage for Port Elga to welcome its first bulk carrier in 2025.
