Metro Ligero Oeste (MLO), the light rail operator in Madrid, has signed a major contract with Alstom to carry out a mid-life overhaul of its 27 Citadis trams, which have been in service since 2007.
This project will involve critical maintenance on key systems such as braking mechanisms, bogies, circuit breakers, and emergency brake controls to ensure safety and reliability for passengers.

Work will kick off with updates to the braking system in January 2025, with further upgrades following in 2026. Alstom’s Pinto facility in Madrid will oversee the engineering, testing, and fine-tuning for the overhaul. This contract is divided into two phases, running from 2025 to 2029, allowing the tram service to operate continuously while essential maintenance is completed.
"This agreement with Alstom Spain reaffirms our confidence in a key partner for the proper performance of our service; and it is a guarantee of optimization of the efficiency of maintenance processes, as well as a key commitment to the safety and continuity of the services we provide to our passengers," stated Pablo Escoda, MLO’s General Manager.
