Alstom, a global leader in sustainable and green mobility solutions, released its first impact report for Kazakhstan. The report produced in collaboration with EY captures Alstom’s socio-economic contributions and ESG goals in Kazakhstan from April 2021 to March 2022.
Alstom has been actively engaged in addressing Kazakhstan’s growing mobility needs, while also supporting the country’s industrial plans. In Astana, Alstom produces passenger and freight electrical locomotives and components such as onboard transformers and bogies. In Almaty, Alstom produces point machines to serve the rail network in the country.
“We are delighted to share the results of this report and the impact of the work being done in Kazakhstan. Our success is driven by a highly dedicated local team that is passionate about serving their country and providing mobility solutions for the Kazakh people,” stated Kanat Alpysbayev, Managing Director for Alstom Western and Central Asia.
“Alstom is committed to developing greener, smarter and safer mobility for our customers but more importantly to building local capability. In 2012, only 4% of the locomotive content was produced in Kazakhstan. Today we are at 31% and are on track to reach 39% by 2025. This report is a demonstration of our commitment to measure and continuously improve our impact in Kazakhstan," said Andrew DeLeone, President of Alstom in Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
The solutions selected by our customers have a considerable impact on the day-to-day lives of Kazakh residents and are an integral part of the modernisation of the country’s rail network. In addition to being faster, offering more capacity and high availability rates, the components for the 250 freight and 119 passenger Prima locomotives are 97% recyclable. Based on Alstom’s operational data, EY also estimated that Alstom trains operated in Kazakhstan have 89% less gCO2/passenger.km compared to cars and the country will see a further reduction in CO2 emissions as they increase the use of renewables in the energy mix.
