Finland's national railway operator, VR, is set to upgrade its Helsinki suburban network with 20 new electric trains to replace its ageing fleet of 34 Sm2 trains that were built between 1975 and 1981. The new trains are expected to improve service reliability and passenger comfort.
VR Group had opened a tender for the purchase of new electric trains in 2019, and on October 24, Stadler was selected as the preferred bidder for the project. According to reports, Stadler won the tender with a contract worth 250 million euros, subject to a 14-day appeal period. The contract includes the supply of spare parts, tools, training, documentation, and an option to purchase up to 50 additional electric trains and maintenance services.
