Siemens Mobility and the state of Baden-Württemberg signed a contract in March 2020, for 20 Mireo Plus B battery-powered trains (BEMU). For Siemens Mobility it was the first order for innovative BEMU trains. The state has now activated an option, which was part of the contract. Siemens will add another three BEMU trains to the order. Siemens signed to take care of the maintenance originally for 29.5 years, however, this was additionally increased for the period of the train's entire service life.

Delivery is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023. Trains will be built in Siemens factory located in Krefeld, Germany. Newly acquired trains are expected to enter new Hermann-Hesse-Bahn between Renningen and Calw. Financing was provided KfW IPEX-Bank, in total EUR 77 million for Baden-Württemberg public transport company (NVBW) has a term of 28 years.

The acquisition is part of the long-term commitment of the government to reduce emissions through the introduction of climate-friendly vehicles, offering a sustainable alternative to the diesel-powered trains on non-electrified rail routes.

The new innovative technology will enable the electrification of rail routes without overhead power lines. Thanks to their battery hybrid drive BEMUs are able to travel for 80 km without another source of energy.

On section Weil der Stadt – Calw the trains will rely solely on the using lithium-ion battery system. And the charging will be done on the section between Weil de Stadt and Renningen using the overhead power lines. The plan also counts on the construction of a new charging facility in Calw in case of night-time shutdown.

In the future Mireo Plus B trains will also be used on the Ortenau S-Bahn network, which is already under an existing contract with Südwestdeutsche Landesverkehrs-AG (SWEG). The Hermann-Hesse-Bahn operation will be an addition to this cooperation.
