The Škoda Group has teamed up with French manufacturer Alstom to deliver trams to Melbourne, Australia, home to one of the world's largest tram networks.

The partnership, marking a significant milestone, involves Škoda producing up to 1,120 traction motors for Alstom's Melbourne-bound trams. This order signifies Škoda's inaugural delivery to Australia. The delivery schedule extends from next year until November 2028, comprising 400 traction motors for 100 trams, with an option for an additional 720 engines. The total order value exceeds €13 million.

Petr Novotný, President of Components & Bus Mobility at Škoda Group, emphasized the trust their partners have in their technological expertise and manufacturing capabilities. "With this prestigious contract, we have proven that we are constantly improving the quality of our products," he said. "Many vehicles around the world are running thanks to our traction drives. And I'm thrilled that we can bring our cutting-edge engines to Australia for the first time and contribute to the further development of one of the world's largest tram networks, which is located in Melbourne."

The traction motor designated for Melbourne's trams is based on Škoda's successful FCX engine range. Each longitudinally mounted engine, offering 105 kW of output and weighing 360 kg, propels the tram axle through a two-speed gearbox. Renowned for their compact design, optimized performance, and outstanding mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, over 50,000 Škoda traction drives are in operation worldwide. Rigorous testing during production ensures top-quality and long life. The comprehensive traction drive portfolio by Škoda caters to specific design requirements, offering tailor-made solutions for a diverse range of vehicles.
