The federal committee has decided to double truck toll prices by 2024 and use part of the revenue to finance railway projects. It was decided within the framework of the adoption of the modernization package for climate protection and acceleration of planning.

The Federal Committee recently increased the toll for trucks in the form of a CO2 surcharge of 200 euros per ton, which also corresponds to doubling the price of the toll. 80% of these revenues will be used to finance railway projects. For years, railway transport associations have been fighting for the equalization of conditions between freight road and rail transport. The increase in tolls for trucks contributed to this equalization. By 2027, the German government wants to reach the level of investment in railways up to 45 billion euros.

Investments will primarily be used to expand the network of terminals in combined transport, modernize railway infrastructure, digitization projects and single-car transport. Although the new rail funding has been largely welcomed by rail associations, companies such as Allianz pro-Schiene and Die G├╝terbahnen have criticized this step. They see the main problem in the fact that incomparably more funds are invested in road transport than in railways. For instance, the CEO of Die G├╝terbahnen, Peter Westenberger, has suggested that more railway projects should be financed from toll revenue.
