Deutsche Bahn has reported a significant operating profit for the 2022 financial year despite challenges arising from the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and rising inflation. The adjusted operating profit (EBIT) rose by €2.8 billion compared to 2021, reaching almost €1.3 billion. Group sales increased by 19.1% year-on-year to around €56.3 billion, setting a new record.

DB Schenker, the logistics subsidiary, was a key driver of the positive performance, with an operating profit of around €1.8 billion, the highest in its history. DB's core business also experienced an overall improvement in revenue and earnings in 2022 compared to the previous year. Around two billion passengers used DB trains in 2022, an increase of about 40% compared to 2021.

CFO Dr Levin Holle emphasised DB Schenker's extraordinarily positive contribution to the Group result. Despite the current market developments, with freight rates in air and sea freight having recently fallen significantly, the logistics subsidiary had shown itself to be in top form. "DB Schenker is a success story and well positioned in all relevant market segments. With its transformation programme launched in 2022, the company is consistently pursuing this path. DB Schenker has the potential to deliver great results in the coming years as well," said Holle.

However, DB Cargo saw increased revenue but remained in the red due to operational challenges and additional costs. Despite high energy costs and the potential normalization of freight rates in the logistics sector, DB aims to balance costs and revenues and continue investing in capacity and punctuality improvements. DB expects an operating loss of around €1 billion in the current fiscal year, with adjusted group revenue exceeding €56 billion.
