Deutsche Bahn (DB) will become the world's first intermodal partner of Star Alliance on August 1. With this move, DB and the air transport industry are sending out another strong signal on the way to greater sustainability in the mobility sector. The new cooperation means that DB customers and passengers of Star Alliance member airlines will in future be able to begin or end their journey in comfort on the climate-friendly train.
For the first time in international air transport, the Star Alliance intermodal partnership model will intelligently link flights, trains and other modes of transport. Star Alliance plans to expand intermodal partnerships in the future. Germany is the first market, and DB is the first partner worldwide in the new Star Alliance program.

Michael Peterson, Member of the Management Board of DB Passenger Transportation: "From Freiburg to Singapore: all it takes is one ticket. By offering attractive domestic connections with simultaneous links to international travel chains, Deutsche Bahn and Star Alliance are making a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in the transport sector. It complements our successful cooperation with Lufthansa Express Rail, where booking figures have more than doubled since 2010. This way, we are getting more people off the plane and onto the environmentally friendly rail. Together with the airlines, we are now taking the mobility revolution one step further. We are networking our offerings in such a way that we can make optimum use of the respective strengths of our modes of transport."
Jeffrey Goh, CEO of Star Alliance: "Today joins the forces of two different transport providers, opening the doors of Star Alliance beyond its airline world. Our new model for intermodal partnerships sets the stage for aligned cooperation between different modes of transportation across all Star Alliance markets. We are happy to welcome Deutsche Bahn as our first Star Alliance intermodal partner."
Harry Hohmeister, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG: "This partnership is unique worldwide. Once again, we are pioneers in Germany for the intelligent linking of transport worlds. We are creating added value for customers, for Germany as a business location, and for the environment and society. Mobility of the future means mastering challenges together. The Krombacher brewery is increasingly relying on the rail. In the future, it will shift up to 750 trucks per year to the environmentally friendly mode…
The new partnership between DB and Star Alliance builds on the Lufthansa Express Rail program. It has already enabled Lufthansa customers to buy a combined ticket for train and flight in one booking step for more than 20 years. In the future, all 25 other Star Alliance member airlines will be able to include DB's environmentally friendly ICE trains with flight numbers in their offers via their booking systems. Customers will thus benefit from many advantages, such as:
- With just one booking process, airline customers receive a combined ticket for outbound or return flights and the respective train journeys, including seat reservations. At check-in - possible until shortly before the train departs - passengers receive boarding passes for both the flight and the train journeys;
- With the integrated ICE journeys, air travellers will in future have even more choice in terms of preferred travel time, travel duration, and the prices offered;
- Customers will also enjoy accelerated baggage handling and other services in the AiRail check-in area at Frankfurt Airport;
- When booking combined train-flight journeys via Lufthansa Express Rail or Star Alliance member airlines, customers can earn points or miles for their train journeys in the airlines' respective frequent flyer programs;
- In addition, Business and First Class customers of Star Alliance member airlines with an LH Express Rail ticket receive additional benefits such as access to the DB Lounges.
