Deutsche Bahn (DB) continues to increase its green power supply by completing its first cross-border, long-term green electricity contract, known as cross-border PPA.
In a 10-year agreement with the Norwegian state energy company Statkraft, the Mågeli hydroelectric plant in southern Norway will supply DB with almost 190 GWh of green electricity per year from 2023.
This was made possible by the Nordlink North Sea cable, which directly connected Norway and the German electricity grid in April 2021.
This amount of green electricity will cover the energy needs of about 40,000 trains in Germany every day for about a week.
DB currently covers more than 60% of its 10TWh annual renewable energy traction needs. It aims for an 80% share of green electricity by 2030 and now plans to have all of DB's traction currents be 100% green by 2038.
More than 100,000 tonnes of annual CO 2 savings and almost four days of sustainable rail traffic are expected to come from two more green electricity contracts that DB has signed in Germany.
For ten years from 2023, more than 90 gigawatt hours of hydropower from Schwarzwald will be delivered to DB by RWE. In addition, as early as next year, Ane Energy will provide 40 GWh per year of green energy produced by wind turbines.
