Derby has been chosen as the location for Great British Railways' national headquarters, as the Department for Transport announced that it ranked first in both the evaluation process and public voting. Cities such as Birmingham, Crewe, Doncaster, Newcastle, and York were shortlisted among the applicants. Derby won on six main criteria: level, connectivity, opportunities for GBR, value for money, heritage, and public support. In total, Derby received 45,600 votes.

The city proved to be the most suitable due to the best-connected railway network and the high concentration of railway enterprises, industries, and supply chains. Voting took place for a total of six weeks, and the official results were announced on March 21. According to Derby City Council Chairman Chris Poulter, the investment will boost not only Derby itself but the entire East Midlands region. Since Derby is the centre of the British railway industry, companies such as Alstom, Rolls-Royce, and Toyota will also appreciate GBR's location in this city.

Derby has not only a railway past but also a present. It is evidenced by the fact that GBR plans to tune in to the ecological, sustainable wave.
