Gatzer's term of office as State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance will run until March 2025 when the appointment of all Supervisory Board members ends.

Gatzer is the longest-serving State Secretary in the German Government, having worked in this role since 2005, and became a member of the DB Supervisory Board in February 2020.
He succeeds Michael Odenwald, who resigned from his post in July, and Klaus-Dieter Hommel has been in charge since then. The outgoing Chairman of the Railway and Transport Union, after 19 years of service, is leaving the DB Supervisory Board. Werner Gatzer believes that a strong and successful DB is crucial for the shift in the mode of transport in Germany, and he looks forward to working together to overcome the major challenges facing the company in the coming years.
